Prepared methyl ester is fed into the hydrogenation reactor together with hydrogen. Before entering the reactor, the feedstock may be preheated with steam or another heat transfer medium to the required reaction temperature.
Inside the reactor, methyl ester and hydrogen pass through a fixed catalyst bed. The reaction occurs in the liquid phase on the catalyst surface covered by a thin liquid film. Hydrogen enables the hydrogenation of methyl ester with the formation of fatty alcohol and methanol.
After the reactor, the reaction mixture is sent to the separation section. Hydrogen is separated, cleaned from liquid droplets, and recycled back to the system through a compressor.
The liquid phase enters the separation system, where methanol is recovered in the methanol recovery column. The main product — fatty alcohol — is then sent to distillation for fraction separation and final product purification.
