Prepared wax ester is fed into a trickle-bed reactor with a fixed catalyst bed. The reactor operates with a simultaneous flow of the liquid wax ester phase and gaseous hydrogen through the catalyst layer.
Hydrogen is supplied in a two-phase flow together with the feedstock. A thin liquid film forms on the catalyst surface, where the wax ester hydrogenation reaction takes place.
The process operates with medium or long residence time in the reaction zone. As a result, the wax ester is hydrogenated to form fatty alcohol. The produced fatty alcohol is discharged from the bottom section of the reactor as a liquid reaction product.
Excess hydrogen leaving the reactor passes through a droplet separator, is recompressed by the hydrogen recycle compressor, and returned back to the system.
